The Dreaded O-Word: Why Online is less scary than you think

Online often has a stigma attached. I often hear people say “I don’t learn well online” or “I just hate using technology”.

And in some ways, I completely understand people’s hesitance. In-person courses and sessions have a lot of pros, mostly feeling more connected to our fellow humans.

But in other ways online sessions and courses can have a lot of benefits too. And here’s why:

1. Stay in your warm and cozy home – especially at night

Imagine for a moment, that it’s a night in the middle of winter. The wind and rain are hammering away at your roof, but you are cozy with the heater on while eating a delicious warm dinner. But! It’s 6:30 and you have a course at 7pm. It’s time to get ready and drive to the class. You turn the car heaters on high, shivering desperately and waiting for the car to warm up. And when you arrive, you make a mad dash through the rain into the building.

That’s option one.

Option two begins the same way, but instead of needing to leave the house, at 10 to 7 you go up to your room and click the zoom link. Fuzzy socks on and a warm cup of tea in hand.

Which of those sounds better to you?

2. No travel time – commutes can be a pain, half an hour there and back takes a full hour out of your day. What could you do in that hour otherwise?

Now for some lucky souls, their course or session is right around the corner. They leave 10 minutes before it starts, but only because they may need time to find parking.

But for the rest of us it can be a much longer trek.

I have definitely had the experience of finding an amazing workshop or course, only to look at the location and discover that it’s an hour and a half drive each way.

Now for a one-off workshop, that’s not too bad. But for a once-a-week course, that can be a deal breaker.

3. Anything we offer online can be done just as well, if not better, than it can be in person

Whenever we offer a course or workshop online, it’s not because we are being lazy and unwilling to leave the house (although that definitely factors in). It’s because the content and timing of the course works better online than it does in person.

We actually prefer teaching face to face when it is viable, but unfortunately it is not always viable.

Both our Tarot and Chakra courses are done online, because of the timing they occur at (late Wednesday night isn’t really the time you want to leave the safety of the nest) and because there would be no benefit to doing them in-person, you would gain nothing and lose time traveling.

4. The technology is very user friendly and available to anyone – and if you struggle you can always give us a call and we’ll help you figure it out

Finally, the thing that scares people the most, technology. Dun dun dun!

It can be pretty intimidating. There are a lot of components and it can go wrong very easily with no apparent reason. Technology can be very temperamental, I know that better than most because of my history with programming.

But that is to your benefit, in my courses I am always here to help. If anything goes wrong with the zoom call, I am usually able to figure it out or find a way around it.

And it is so user friendly these days. It is literally just the click of a button.

In Conclusion

All that’s not to say you have to do an online course or session. You could probably avoid them for your whole life if you tried hard enough (and with the way the world is going, it might become very hard).

But you shouldn’t have to miss out on a course you are passionate about or a practitioner you love just because of the online factor.

So next time you find yourself staring in terror at the O-word, remember this. You are a lot more capable than you think you are.

And also, it’s not that hard.
